二十世纪初，美国社会学的独立还不明显。好些社会学家参加了历史、经济和政治学协会。1905年十二月，约一百名社会学家在巴尔的摩集会，成立了“美国社会学学会”，后改名为“美国社会学协会”(The　Amerian　Sociological　Asso-ciation)。1906年举行第一次会议，沃德当选为第一任会长，并将《美国社会学杂志》定为会刊。1936年中断了与这个杂志的联系，另行创办了The　American　Sociologi-cal　Review(《美国社会学评论》)。
　　到五十年代前期，该协会会员发展到四千人(包括学生会员)。到六十年代早期，在华盛顿设立了全国办事处。1966年，协会创办了The　American　Sociologist(《美国社会学家》)。
　　“美国社会学协会”出版了好些刊物，如Sociometry(《社会成员心理研究及测定》)，刊载有关社会心理学的论文；The　Journal　of　Educational　Sociology(《教育社会学杂志》)，后改名为The　Journal　of　the　Sociology　of　Education；The　Journal　of　Health　and　Hu-man　Behavior(《保健和人类行为杂志》)，后改名为The　Journal　of　Health　and　Social　Behavior(《保健和社会行为杂志》)；Foot-nots(《美国社会学协会通讯》)。
