A Comparative Research on Model Construction of Addition
and Subtraction Word Problem between
Deaf and Normal Students

AbstractThis research compares deaf students and normal ones in addition and subtraction word problem solving and problem model construction through selecting 32 deaf students and 33 normal students in the third grade of primary schools. The results show that: there is significant difference between the two groups of students in that the normal students perform better than the deaf ones both on problem solving and problem model construction; and problem model construction plays an important role in addition and subtraction word problem solving among deaf students. This paper emphasizes the importance of problem representation training in word problem instruction for deaf students.
